Over a million senior citizens and the disabled reside in nursing homes. The law demands that these nursing homes exercise the highest practical level of care for each patient. Some do. Unfortunately, others do not. Often, it's loved ones who suffer for the nursing home's lapse in care.

Patients that find themselves the victims of neglect and/or abuse from a nursing home or its employees are often harmed mentally as well as physically.

Keep your eyes open. Detecting neglect and abuse in a nursing home facility can be difficult. That's because nursing home victims are often incapable of communicating the existence of abuse or neglect because of their physical and/or mental limitations.

Instances of nursing home negligence and/or abuse includes (but not limited to):

  • Failure to provide proper nutrition and hydration
  • Failure to assist in personal hygiene when needed
  • Over- or under-medication
  • Failure to take reasonable precautions to prevent falls
  • Slapping or other physical abuse of the resident
  • Use of unwarranted chemical or physical restraints
  • Failure to take adequate precautions to prevent injury to the resident
  • Failure to provide for appropriate medical care
  • Sexual assault or rape of the resident
